Nursery Lesson Plan 1: God is Good - 28th August 2011


Lesson Plan
FIBC Nursery (0-4 years old)
Date: 28th August 2011, Time: 1 – 2.30pm
Concept Area: God

Theme: God is good
Bible Verse: Psalm 73:1 “God is good to us.”
Teachers: Elaine, VK and Gina

12.45 – 1pm: Preparation Time
·         Teachers to arrive 15 minutes earlier to prepare and set up the room.
·         Bring a jug of water.
·         Mark Attendance.
·         Fill in Food Allergy Alert Chart for new children

1-1.30pm: Activity Time


Activity Station 1: Fishing ABCs


Objective(s):
1. To get to know the fishes
2. To introduce alphabet that God created

Materials:
1. 1 Basin filled with water
2. 10 – 15 Plastic fishes
3. 1 fishing rod
4. 10 Jar lids
5. 1 Tray


Say: “God created all things, God created the fishes”.



Activity Station 2: Cutting Food


Objective(s):
1. To train the children’s fine motor skills
2. To teach the names of different fruits and vegetables created by God


Materials:
1. Cut food toy
2. Plastic knifes

Say: “God is good to us, He created food to nourish us.”

Activity Station 3: Making Animals and People with Playdough


Objective(s):
1. To train children’s fine motor skills
2. To provide opportunity for the children to show their creativity


Materials:
1. Playdough
2. Cookie shapes mould


Say: “You are learning to create things with playdough. God created all things, God created all the animals and all the people in this world”.

 
Activity Station 4: Cutting Pictures with Scissors


Objective(s):
1. To train the children’s fine motor skills
2. To increase the children’s vocabulary with words from the magazine’s pictures, at the same time linking to God’s creation and the concept area God is good.


Materials:
1. Magazines with food, household items, etc.
2. Children scissors 3. Construction papers with Bible verse written on them. 4. Glue

Say: “God created all things. God is good to us. He provides us with clothes to wear, food to eat, etc."

Activity Station 5: Matching Family of Farm Animals (Contingency Activity)


Objective(s): To get to know the names of the animals that God created


Materials:
2 sets of animal cards to match


Say: “God created all things, God created all the animals. God is good. God gives us mommy and daddy”.

Activity Station 6: Transferring Stones with Tongs (Contingency Activity)


Objective(s):
1. To train the children’s fine motor skills
2. To provide sensory experience playing with God’s creation - water


Materials:
1. 2 bowls
2. 10 stones
3. 1 pair of tongs
4. 1 tray


Say: “God is good, He created all the rocks and stones.”

Activity Station 7: Puzzles (Contingency Activity)


Objective(s):
1. To train the children’s fine motor skills
2. To stimulate the children’s brain development


Materials:

Puzzles for children from 1 – 2 years old.


1.30 – 1.45pm: Bible Story Time with Singing


Gather the children to sit together in a circle.


Bible Story: Creation (Genesis 1 – 2)


A long time ago, there was nothing at all. (Show an empty box covered by a piece of cloth as darkness.)
But God was there. The first day, God said, “Let there be light!” (Show the number puppet 1 to represent first day and remove the cloth from the box to provide light)
The light He called day. (Shine a torch light to signify light and put it into the box)
The dark He called night. (Cover the box with the piece of cloth again)
The second day, God made the earth and the sky. (Show the number puppet 2 to represent second day and show the cloud puppet)
The third day, God made the land and the seas. (Show a container of pebbles and rock and water and put it into the box)
The fourth day, God made the sun and the moon. (Show a big sun and a big moon and put it into the box)
The fifth day, God made the birds and fishes. (Show a bird and a fish and put it into the box or do the hand sign)
The sixth day, God made the animals and the first man and woman. (Bring out all the animal figurines and a man and a woman)
On the seventh day, God rested. (Show the pillow)
The creation was complete and God said, “It was very good.”

To reinforce the learning, at the end of the Bible Story, as the children: "What did God create on the first day?"

Bible Verses: Psalm 73:1 “God is good to us.”

Introduce the key Bible Verses with musical instruments, hand motions and songs as follows:
·    God Is So Good
·    God Is Good, All the Time

1.45 – 2pm: Snack Time
·    Gather the children to sit together in a circle.
·    Say: “God is so good to us, He gives us snacks to eat and water to drink. Let’s say grace together.”
·    Sing the “Say Grace Song

To reinforce the learning, at the End of the snack time, ask the children: "God is good to us, what can you do to make God happy?" Answer: Help mommy and daddy at home. Help my friends. God will be pleased to see you be a good boy or girl."

Game: Memory Verse Activity

To help reinforce the learning, play the memory verse activity by asking the children to one-by-one repeat the verse of the day.

2 – 2.15pm: Clean up Time
·    Clean up together and sing the song “Time to Clean Up
·    Sterile toys with wet wipe

2.15 - 2.30pm: Physical Game

Game: Musical Chair

Say: "God is good. He gives us friends to play musical chair with."

2.30pm: Parents pick up kids

Dear Parents,


This past Sunday, we were privileged to have 13 children at the nursery. We would like to share with you what we did this Sunday. We hope it would help you to reinforce the learning throughout this week with your child.

Concept Area
This week we focused on God – God is good. We illustrated God's goodness to us through His creation.

Key Bible Verse
The Bible verse used is Psalm 73:1 - God is good to us. You can recite this verse to your child at home during the week.

Bible Story
We told the story about God’s creation from Genesis 1:1 – 2:1 to the children . You can read about the story (children’s version) here:

Songs
We planned to sing the songs God Is So Good and God Is Good, All The Time, but we did not manage to do it. However, you can learn it here and sing it together with your child at home:

Activities
We hope this helps you to keep up with the education your child received at the nursery this Sunday.
We did activities that touched on God’s creation such as animals, food, water, etc.
For preschoolers 2-4 years old, we had an activity station with pictures of food, clothes, flowers, etc. where the children could cut and paste onto a paper printed with the key Bible verse and letting know that all things are created by God. We also had a station where the children fished for fishes and letters. This activity was a big hit with the children. We tried to teach them that God created fishes, letters and language. At the playdough station, the children learned to create things with playdough. We had a station with farm animal figurines with matching cards. While they were working on the activities, we repeated to the children that God created all things, God is good. The children also get to learn about the vegetables and fruits that God created through cutting plastic food activity.
For toddlers 1-2 years old, we provided them with wooden baby puzzles and some wooden toys, but the plastic food cutting toys proved to be the most popular!
At story time, we told the story of God’s creation in 7 days using simple props such as number puppets. We started by using an empty box covered with a piece of cloth to signify that there was nothing in the beginning, which attracted the children and gathered them to sit around in a circle on the floor.
After the story time, we played the memory verse game, by asking the children to repeat Psalm 73:1 one-by-one.

Bible Story: God's Creation (Genesis 1:1 - 2:1)

Nursery Lesson Plan 22: Choices - 21st August 2011


Dear Parents,

Here is a brief summary about the concept area and the activities we introduced to the children on Sunday:

Concept Area:
SELF

Theme:

I can make choices/ I can make right and wrong choices

Bible Story: 
Daniel 1:8-21
Daniel obeyed God and chose Good Food

Bible Verse:
1 John 3:22 " Do those things that are pleasing to God"

Activities:
We had a sticking and pasting station where the children chose pictures of food that they liked and were they could stick it on and the verse above is written on. Use this if you would like to reinforce the lesson and the memory verse.
We also had a kitchen station where the children played and prepared play food.
During story time the children were told the story of Daniel choosing not to eat the nice (but unhealthy) food, but rather the healthy food that God would want him to eat.  Thus he was obeying God.  In return God blessed him and his friends by making them stronger and healthier and more clever than the other men serving in the King's Palace.  We played a game of food tasting and guessing afterwards (I think they enjoyed this) and again we reinforced how mummy and daddy give healthy food because they love us.  And just as Daniel did what God wanted him to do we need to do what mummy and daddy want us to do.

Nursery Lesson Plan 33: God Cares For Me - 14th August 2011


Dear Parents,

Praise the Lord for it has been very encouraging to see your children on Sunday 14 August 2011!

I hope that the children can continuously be reminded in this coming week about how God cares for them and also for you. Please use the small paper slip that you hopefully have received on 1 Peter 5:7 to help your children to remember this precious promise from God.

Please find a brief summary below about the concept area and the activities we introduced to the children today:

Concept Area:

God

Theme:

God cares for me.

Bible Story:

Luke 2:6-7 God cares for baby Jesus when he was born. Joseph and Mary care for baby Jesus.

Bible Verse:

1 Peter 5:7 Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you. (Children’s version: God cares for me.)

Activities:

We introduced to the children about God cares for us, trying to let them understand what the word ‘CARES’ mean and how the children themselves could apply this at home with their family, friends and even their pets and plants. We try to let them to remember that God loves us and cares for us.

As a follow-up from last Sunday’s learning aim – ‘I like to go to church’, we started by pasting photos of each pre-school child on the church cardboard-model to remind them that they are part of God’s church. This was followed by an activity of having the children trying to give a vinyl baby doll a bath and feeding, so that they could understand how they could care for a little baby. We also set up a station where they children decorate and paint their own little box, whereby each child was then guided on how to plant cress ('karse') seeds and water them, and to bring their plant-box home to continue to give the seeds plenty of sunlight, water and loving care. At story-time, the children heard the story about how baby Jesus was cared for by God and his parents, and having the children try to repeat saying that ‘God cares for us’ and also through the physical hop-hop activity. There was also a station with 2 small goldfishes that the children had a go at feeding them with small amounts of fish-food and again reinforcing the concept of caring for our pets.

I urge and encourage you as a parent to continue the learning aim at home from what the children have learned at pre-school, and I hope to see you all again at church on Sunday!

Nursery Spring Cleaning Day - 13th August 2011

Here is the result of our hard work. A BIG thank you to everyone for your team work, without which would not be possible. Rochelle will be doing a write-up for our newsletter. You will read more about it :-)

As you know, we discussed during our last quarterly Nusery meeting that the nursery badly needs a cleaning. Rochelle is organizing a cleaning of the nursery. We are needing volunteers to help to clean and organize the nursery. Please sign-up or let her know if  you can make it on the proposed date.

Date: Saturday, 13th August 2011

Time: 10am

A. Programme Time-Table

Here is the programme time-table suggested by Rochelle:

10 - 11am: Start with our cleaning tasks

11 - 11.30am: Snack - muffins baked by Rochelle :-)

11.30 - 12.30pm: Cleaning tasks

12.30 - 1.30pm: Lunch

1.30 - XXpm: Cleaning tasks and pack up :-)

B. Working Teams

It might be a good idea to divide the tasks and appoint a team leader for each team. Below are some suggested teams and the name in bold in the bracket is the team leader who has agreed to guide and coordinate the volunteers for that particular team.

So now, all we need are volunteers :-). Please have a look and let us know which team you would like to join.

The 5 Teams are:

I. Cleaning Nursery Team (Jannie, Allan)
II. Cleaning Toys Team (Rochelle)
III. Assembling of New furniture Team (Mark, Stephen)
IV. Organizing and Labeling Toys Team (Elaine, Glory)
V. Baby-Sitting Team (Sarma/Wimin)
VI. The Food Team (Thys, Mark)

The tasks of the teams are as follows:

I. Cleaning Nursery Team (Jannie)

1. Vacuuming or sweeping the floor
2. Vacuuming the cabinets
3. Wiping the cabinets shelves
4. Mopping the floor
5. Wiping the table tops
6. Carrying buckets of water up and down the stairs (need some volunteers with strong hands here)

II. Cleaning Toys Team (Rochelle)

1. Washing and drying the toys under the keep and give piles
2. Sterile and disinfecting the toys
3. Throwing away unwanted toys

III. Assembling of New Furniture Team (Mark)

1. Assemble all the new furniture from IKEA with a few other strong boys

IV. Organizing and Labeling Toys Team (Elaine)

Here is what I propose to go about organizing the nursery:

1. Sorting toys into 3 piles: Keep, Give and Throw

2. Create Activity Areas as follows:

a. Work Station
b. Cleaning Station
c. Play Kitchen Station
d. Musical Instruments Corner
e. Art Corner with easel and basic art supplies

3. Organize the toys into sub-categories as follows:

1. Puzzles (both wooden and jigsaw)
2. Board Games
3. Wooden blocks
4. Books
5. Art Supplies, magnetic drawing board, etc.
6. Train Set
7. Theatre play puppets and props
8. Cleaning toys such as brush and dustpan, vacuum cleaners, etc.
9. Alphabet and numbers toys
10. Musical Instruments
11. Cars and vehicles
12. Kitchen toys
13. Dress up Chest
14. Dolls
15. Toys for rotation

4. Find the appropriate boxes to store them and label them with the labeling machine

5. Find the appropriate shelf space to store the boxes

V. Baby-Sitting Team (Sarma/Wimin)

Here are just some activity ideas for the baby-sitting team, but you don’t have to take them:

1. Children’s Videos

Rochelle suggested a very good idea about putting videos for the children. She will bring along the laptop to play the videos

2. Montessori Cleaning Activity

Since the theme is cleaning, maybe we can introduce some Montessori Practical Life activity on cleaning. Just a suggestion, of course, it depends on the mood and interests of the children. Elaine can bring the children cleaning kit. Here are some links to see how the concept is implemented:

As  suggested by Wimin, as it is a cleaning-day, and the activities are relating to this, we could guide and teach the children to help them understand that God helps us and how the children themselves can help in the family in simple chores and in the church as well. We can use this Bible memory verse from Psalm 46:1: "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble." and as we are guiding them in the activities, we could say 'God helps me' and for older children, we could for example, say to the, 'I like to help my family' or 'I like to help the church'.

3. Montessori Pouring, Spooning and Scooping Activity

Since the floor would have to be cleaned anyway, it is alright if the children can do some pouring activity in the nursery. Elaine can bring along some of the materials. Here is how the concept can be implemented:

I think the above suggested activities should be more than sufficient to occupy the children for a day, while the parents are cleaning the nursery. If you have other ideas, please feel free to let us know :-)
