Nursery Lesson Plan 49: Jesus Loves Me - 22nd September 2013

Lesson Plan 49

FIBC Nursery (0-5 years old)

Date: 21th September 2013, Time: 12.30 – 1.45pm

Concept Area: Jesus

Theme: Jesus Loves Me

Bible Verses: John 15:12 “Jesus loves me.”

Bible Story: Jesus, Friend of Children – Jesus asks children to come to Him
(Mark 10:13-16)

Teachers: Elaine, Rochelle and Steven

12.30-12.40pm: Early Arrival Activity Time

Activity Station 1: Drawing someone special

Have crayons or colored markers and blank sheets of paper on the tables before the class begins. As the kids arrive, tell them to think of someone who is very special to them, and then draw a picture showing why they are so special. When finished, ask them to talk about their drawings with the rest of the class.

Activity Station 2: Make a string with hearts

Fold color papers into half, draw and cut out the hearts. Write “Jesus loves (name of child)” on them. Glue them on a string or a piece of paper.

12.40-12.50pm: Opening Prayer, Praise & Worship

According to www.kidssundayschool.com, it is important to open with a word of prayer to invite the Holy Spirit to be in control of your class and to prepare the children’s heart to be serious and ready for class. It also signals the end of early arrival activities.

Before praying, ask the children to share 1 prayer request and jot down what is said rather than to rely on memory. (It is important though to make sure that the children stay focused on giving only a praise or prayer request and not to become carried away by other issues. If the class is big, consider breaking into smaller groups and have prayer led by more than one leader or helper).

Pray:

1. Thank God for bringing everyone here.
2. Say the verse John 15:12, “Jesus loves me.”
3. Pray for God’s guidance on the teacher to share the Word of God in a meaningful way.
4. Pray for God to open the children’s heart to learning His Word and to invite the Holy Spirit’s presence in the classroom.
5. Pray for the prayer request touching on each child’s request to let them know that you care about them and that their prayers are important.

Praise & worship is an important part of the lesson, even for preschoolers to learn to praise and worship God.

Use hand motions and sing the following songs:
• Jesus Loves Me
• Who Made the Big Round Sun?
• Jesus Loves and He Cares for Me

12.50-1pm: Bible Lesson & Story Time

Gather the children sitting on chairs around the sofa for Bible Story Time. After the introduction, read the story about Jesus and the little children right from the Children’s Bible.

Bible Story: Jesus, Friend of Children – Jesus asks children to come to Him (Mark 10:13-16)

Introduction:
One day, many people were gathered around Jesus, asking him difficult questions. Questions like who will be the greatest in Heaven, when is it okay to get a divorce, who can cast out demons? Jesus was very busy giving God's answers to these difficult questions, when suddenly, he stopped. Something was happening that Jesus believed was more important than these questions. Let's find out what it was. Our story continues in the Book of Mark.

The Little Children and Jesus
13 People were bringing little children to Jesus for him to place his hands on them, but the disciples rebuked them. 14 When Jesus saw this, he was indignant. He said to them, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. 15 Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.” 16 And he took the children in his arms, placed his hands on them and blessed them.

Pray: Thank you, Jesus, for loving me. Amen.

1-1.20pm: Snack Time

Let the children prepare the snacks by cutting up apples, bananas, etc.

• Helper helps to arrange a table with the fruits, chopping boards, butter knifes and apple cutters neatly on the table.
• Ask the children to queue up and clean their hands with wet wipes first.
• Ask the older children to help by giving out the cups, plates and rice snack.
• Sing the “Say Grace Song”
• Ask each child to recite: “Jesus loves me.” John 15:12
• As the children to help to clean up before moving to game time.

1.20-1.30pm: Clean up Time

• Clean up together and sing the song “Time to Clean Up”

1.30-1.40pm: Game Time

Game: Musical Chair – A Chair for a Crown

Arrange the chairs in a circle with one less than the number of children. Have the kids walk around the chairs as you play or sing the song "Jesus Loves Me." When you suddenly stop the music, or shout out the phrase "sit down!" the children must find a chair to sit down. Give the one who does not have a chair a crown to wear while taking a few moments to tell the other children why he or she believes Jesus loves him or her. This will help build the self-esteem of the children as it will demonstrate that the child without the chair is not a “loser”, but that that child is special because of Jesus' love.

When finished, take back the crown and give the child a sticker or a treat. The child can then sit and watch the others. Remove another chair and continue play until everyone has a chance to wear the crown.

Contingency Game: Holahoop Telematch or What’s the Time Mr. Wolf?

1.40-1.45pm: Closing Prayer

Closing prayer is equally important. It gives an opportunity to sum up the lesson and remind children the importance of prayer in their daily life. The closing prayer needs to be brief as the children may be eager to leave. It should include:

1. Thanking God for His love.
2. Pray for God’s protection as the children go home and start a new week.
3. Pray that others may see Jesus in our lives.

1.45pm: Parents pick up kids

While waiting for the parents to come, talk about the names of several Bible characters and have the children choose their favorite Bible character. Next, ask them what makes that character special. For example: David was special because he was able to defeat a big giant with God's help.

Give the parents a Take-Home Page

Concept Area – Church

Theme: People thank God at church

Bible verse: Psalm 136:1 Say thank you to God

Bible Stories:

The 10 Lepers (Luke 17:11-19)

Activity 1: Making “Thank you” card (Visual & Kinaesthetic)

This activity is a warming up activity to introduce the children the theme of the day, “People thank God at church”. Throughout this activity, the children will be introduced to the following questions:

What do you say when someone gives you something special?
What do you say when someone does something for you that makes you feel happy?
What do you say when someone does something to show they love you?
Why we say thank you to God?
How people at church say thank you to God?

The children can choose one of the following “Thank you” card making:

Trace the heart
The children trace a heart shape using a template on a colour card. Then they cut the heart shape along the lines they have just traced. Decorate the heart shaped card and help them to write thank you note to someone they would like this card to be dedicated to.

Trace the fingers
The children trace their 10 fingers on a piece of colour card. Let the children use their own creativity to decorate the fingers that they traced on the card. While the children decorating their traces of 10 fingers, introduce them the 10 lepers. Help them to write “thank you” on the card and thank you note to someone they would like this card to be dedicated to.

I've got the love of Jesus in my heart
Down in my heart
And I'm so happy
So very happy
I've got the love of Jesus in my heart.

And if the Devil doesn't like it
He can sit on a tack!
Ouch!
Sit on a tack!
Ouch!
Sit on a tack!
And if the Devil doesn't like it
He can sit on a tack!
Ouch!
Sit on a tack to stay!

And I'm so happy
So very happy
I've got the love of Jesus in my heart
Down in my heart
And I'm so happy
So very happy
I've got the love of Jesus in my heart.

Jesus Loves Me

Jesus loves me this I know
For the Bible tells me so
Little ones to Him belong
They are weak, but He is strong
Yes, Jesus loves me (3x)
For the Bible tells me so!

My God Is So Great

My God is so great, so strong and so mighty, there's nothing my God cannot do.
My God is so great, so strong and so mighty, there's nothing my God cannot do.
The mountains are his, the rivers are his, the stars are His handiwork, too.
My God is so great, so strong and so mighty, there's nothing my God cannot do, for you!

The Butterfly Song

If I were a butterfly
I'd thank you Lord for giving me wings
If I were a robin in a tree
I'd thank you Lord that I could sing
If I were a fish in the sea
I'd wiggle my tail and I'd giggle with glee
But I just thank you Father for making me, me

CHORUS
For you gave me a heart and you gave me a smile
You gave me Jesus and you made me your child
And I just thank you Father for making me, me

If I were an elephant
I'd thank you Lord by raising my trunk
If I were a kangaroo
You know I'd hop right up to you
If I were an octopus
I'd thank you Lord for my fine looks
But I just thank you Father for making me, me

If I were a wiggly worm
I'd thank you Lord that I could squirm
If I were a fuzzy, wuzzy bear
I'd thank you Lord for my fuzzy, wuzzy hair
If I were a crocodile
I'd thank you Lord for my great smile
But I just thank you Father for
making me, me

Guiding Behavior in Children in FIBC Nursery

The following are the guidelines FIBC Nursery adopts in guiding the behavior of children in FIBC Nursery. It is by Janice Hayhood.

Guiding Behavior in Children

  • Develop meaningful relationships. Show your respect for them.

  • Expect them to behave. Expect the best from them and let them know it. Be positive.

  • Establish boundaries - maintain boundaries. Make rules together. Ask: "What do we need to do in order to have a good time together?" Make "do" instead of "don't" rules. Make them general, instead of specific. Example: We will be respectful of others.

  • Identify needs of children and respond accordingly. All behavior and misbehavior has a cause. Determine the need which is not being met and seek a way to meet it in a positive way.

  • Provide a variety of activities -  to meet various meeds as well as interests. Not every child likes every kind of activity. Provide a variety of "seeing", "hearing" and "doing" activities.

  • Keep groups small - and pupil/teacher ratio workable.

  • Give much encouragement and honest descriptive praise. Describe to them what they are doing that is good or right - not just "good job" or "that's good".

  • Be fully prepared when the first child arrives.

  • Be flexible. Be flexible enough to change your plans if the children do not respond positively to what you are doing.

  • Do not expect the impossible - they are children.

Guiding Misbehavior

  • Determine if you need to change something you are doing wrong. Is this misbehavior your fault? Do not blame them for something that is your fault.

  • Stay calm and in control.

  • Deal with problems as soon as possible.

  • Deal with the child or children who are misbehaving, not the entire group.

  • Identify the problem respectfully and with authority. Be firm, but kind.

  • Don't make threats that you cannot or will not carry out.

  • Take the action stated when necessary. If you say you are going to do something as a result of misbehavior, follow through.

Disciplinary Strategies

1. Consequences

Make consequences of misbehavior related and fair. "If you cannot use the markers correctly, you will not be able to use the markers." If they cannot sit by friends and behave, they will be separated from friends.

2. Remedy, Amends or Contribution

They must be guided to "make right" what they have done. Example: Pay for something they have destroyed, "do service" for someone from whom they have stolen, etc.

3. Problem - Think!

Teach them to think through their problems. Help them to work out their own problems - don't always solve the conflicts for them - guide them to come up with their own solutions.

4. Physical Discipline (not hitting)

Move children who cannot get along or who get in trouble together; sit a child who has problems with self-control near you.

5. Time Out

Do not use for punishment, but use as a place for a child to get control of him/herself so that the problem can be "worked out".

Song: I've Got the Joy Down In My Heart

I've Got the Joy In My Heart
I've got the joy, joy, joy, joy down in my heart
Where?
Down in my heart!
Where?
Down in my heart!
I've got the joy, joy, joy, joy down in my heart
Down in my heart to stay

And I'm so happy
So very happy
I've got the love of Jesus in my heart
Down in my heart
And I'm so happy
So very happy
I've got the love of Jesus in my heart.

I've got the love of Jesus, love of Jesus
Down in my heart
Where?
Down in my heart!
Where?
Down in my heart!
I've got the love of Jesus, love of Jesus
Down in my heart
Where?
Down in my heart to stay.

And I'm so happy
So very happy
I've got the love of Jesus in my heart
Down in my heart
And I'm so happy
So very happy
I've got the love of Jesus in my heart.

I've got the peace that passes understanding
Way down in the depths of my heart!
Where?
Down in the depths of my heart!
Where?
Down in the depths of my heart!
I've got the peace that passes understanding
Way down in the depths of my heart!
Down in my heart to stay

And I'm so happy

Nursery Minutes of Meeting – 26 January 2013

Dear all,

Please find below the meeting minutes of today's meeting, which was held in the Lord's spirit and kept within the time allocated for the meeting.

Meeting Notes for Saturday 20 October 2012

Present: Rochelle, Simon, Allan, Jannie, VK, Wi Min, Juliana and Elaine

Babysitter: Thanks to Cecilia for baby-sitting

Agenda:

"1. To discuss to use the old nursery room for Pre-school as temporary solution until the fireplace room is cleaned up and ready for use. To discuss the needed practical arrangement to use the old nursery room. To discuss the possibility to restart Sunday Pre-school from 27th Jan using the old nursery room."

Decision: We decided to use the old nursery room as a temporary solution until the fireplace room has been properly cleaned up. We resume classes tomorrow, Jan 27th.

"2. To discuss the yearly Spring Cleaning of fireplace room, for example the date and the practical arrangement."

Decision: We decided to ask the Connect group to help clean up the fireplace room sometime when we are sure the room will no longer be used as a shelter for the homeless. We see no urgency for this as the old nursery room can function until the fireplace room has been cleaned. Date has not been set, but Simon Coote volunteered to coordinate the yearly Spring Cleaning of the room.

"3. To fix the teaching schedule for the next period from 3 Feb 2013 onwards"

Action: the new teaching schedule has been agreed upon and will be uploaded to Planning Centre by Simon Coote. Also, Elaine will upload it to our Nursery Blog. Helpers are kindly asked to verify the schedule, once uploaded, and find replacement for those dates they are not available (swap dates).

"4. To discuss and agree on the ground rules for all the teachers and helpers, for example, duty swapping rules, Sunday Pre-school cancellation rules and who to contact to make announcement in the church service regarding the lesson cancellation for that Sunday."

Decision: the rules proposed by VK were unanimously accepted. They are as follows:

1. Teaching schedule is agreed and fixed at each Quarterly Meeting.

2. Once the schedule is fixed, the teacher assigned to the Sunday on duty is responsible to initiate the swapping with another teacher if anything unplanned happen later on. After the agreement is reached, the teacher is responsible to inform Schedule Coordinator to update the Planning Centre.

3. The teacher on-duty is empowered and fully responsible for all the decision making on the Sunday on duty if something unexpected happen. Any issue cannot be resolved and decided by the teacher, he or she should take the initiative to discuss the issue with Austin immediately and make the decision together with him.

4. Cancellation of lesson should be the last solution, in the circumstances after the attempt of swapping with another teacher or finding substitute is not successful.

5. In the case of cancellation of lesson which is known in advanced, the announcement should be published at the bulletin at least one week in advanced and it should not be published on the actual Sunday. This will allow the parents to have time to decide on how to handle their children when there is no Sunday Pre-School in the following Sunday. This shall be done by email by the leader of the upcoming lesson to Ann-Boye Hansen before the Wednesday will ensure it is included in the announcements.

6. Cancellation of lesson due to the teacher is sick on the Sunday he or she on duty and after failing to find any substitute at last minute is an exceptional case. In this situation, the teacher needs to call Austin as soon as possible so that he can make the announcement during the service.

"5. To discuss tasks delegation and empowerment in the Sunday Pre-school ministry, for example, who is responsible for supplies, yearly spring cleaning, communications, Christmas special project, set up teaching schedule, enlisting, training new teachers and helpers and the like."

Action: All involved parents assumed one or more roles. These roles can be swapped as we go forward but for now, they are as follows:
Teaching Schedule Coordinator: Simon Coote
Supplies Coordinator and Shopper: Jannie Silfverberg
Christmas Project Coordinator: Rochelle Coote
2nd Project Coordinator: Juliana Hans
Nursery Team Communication vs Church: Simon Coote
Spring Cleaning Coordinator: Simon Coote
Curriculum Coordinator: VK & WM Tan
Quarterly Meeting Coordinator: Allan Silfverberg

Training of Teachers and Helpers: VK & WM Tan
Enlisting of New Teachers & Helpers: Simon Coote
Pre-School/Nursery Website: Elaine
Attendance Lists: VK

For the record: Simon has decided to take a more administrative role for the Pre-School/Nursery and will not be leading classes, although he will continue to serve as a helper.

"6. Next Quarterly Nursery Meeting"
Date: 20 April 2013
Time: 2.30pm-4.30pm
Venue: @ the Silfverbergs, Pilegårdsparken 14, 3460 Birkerød

Agenda points will be collected by Allan Silfverberg and submitted to all in due time before the meeting.

Thanks for your faithful participation and commitment to putting the nursery/pre-school on God's agenda for our kids!
Blessings,
Allan
