Song: Feed Us Now

The people came to hear you,

The rich, the lame, the blind

They asked for food to save them

And you fed them body and mind

Feed us now, O Son of God, as you fed them long ago

Nursery Lesson Plan 16: I Can Help Others - 15 January 2012

Dear everyone,
Please find a brief summary about the concept area and the activities planned for the children on Sunday 15 January 2012:

As there were only 2 children who attended the pre-school class on 08 January, VK and I decided to repeat and reinforce the learning session on 15 January with different learning activities.

Concept Area:

Community and World

Theme:

I can help others around me.

Bible Story:

Luke 10:25-37 Jesus tells about the Good Samaritan

Bible Verse:

Galatians 5:13 Help one another

Activities:

We continued with the minds-on and interactive activities of talking with the children using picture examples of how the children can help at home, for example, taking care of a younger sibling while mommy is cooking, visiting grandparents, helping with household chores such as doing laundry, baking and walking the dog together. The children were encouraged to draw an outline of their hands on coloured paper to connect the idea of their 'helping hands' with how the Good Samaritan helps the injured man. (Luke 10:25-37).

Another station with the children's kitchen was used with plastic cooking utensils and food, whereby the children could play and learn at the same time while teachers guided them in their learning of how they can be helpful at home, such as baking and cooking with parents and siblings.

The other stations included activities for colouring a picture of 'The Good Samaritan', Joining-the-dots and tracing for the older toddlers who were interested in these activities.

The Bible story of 'The Good Samaritan' was re-taught again, with a time of reflection at the end using open-ended questions to the children, such as
'Why and how was the Samaritan good?'
'What do you think the Priest and the Levite should have done?'
'How can we be a good Samaritan?'
'How can we help one another at home or at school (vuggestue/børnehave)?'

This teaching session concluded with a time of hands-on learning by encouraging the children to pick out selected coloured gummi bears from a bowl of mixed gummi bears and serving the selected colours in another child's bowl.

Overall, it was a great joy to see many children and new faces that day and I hope to see everyone again at pre-school!

Blessings,

Nursery Lesson Plan 16: I Can Help Others - 8 January 2012

Dear Parents,

Happy new year to all the Sunday Pre-school children and parents.

I hope that the children can continuously be reminded in this coming week about I can help others around me. Please continue to remind your children about how your children can help one another in their communities like at school and family.

Please find a brief summary below about the concept area and the activities we introduced to the children yesterday:

Concept Area:

Community and World

Theme:

I can help other around me

Bible Story:

Luke 10:25-37 Jesus tells about the Good Samaritan

Bible Verse:

Galatians 5:13 Help one another

Activities:

We introduced to the children about The Good Samaritan. We set up 4 activities stations, one of them was pasting various pictures on helping one another like helping old people crossing the road, helping friends who fell down, helping each other to climb mountain, helping the weak and injured one in disasters, and helping each other in paddy field. Through this activity, we have a good conversation time with the children to introduce them the concept of helping one another. At the 2nd activity station, the children did colouring on a picture of the Good Samaritan. We introduced the story about the Good Samaritan helping the injured person at the roadside. The 3rd activity was letting the children to nurse a baby doll. They were guided on how they could help to put on a plaster on a baby doll as if there was a cut on his leg. The children also helped to put on a baby diaper. This activity help the children to understand that they can help the younger children at home or in their community. The last activity station was a bible story station where the children can choose a bible story they like and we tell them the story.

During the Bible story telling time, we introduced them The Good Samaritan story. After the bible story telling, we reinforced the learning from this bible story by asking them who is the person in the story, the priest, the Levite or the Samaritan did the right thing. We also try to have a conversation with the children about how they can help one another at home or at school to connect this concept with their daily life and application. We concluded the Bible story time by playing a fun game. We ask each child what was their preferred colour of the gummi bears and the rest of the children helped one another to pick up their friends' preferred  colours from a big bowl of mixed gummi bears into their friends' bowls. This activity enhanced their understanding of the concept of the day.

I urge and encourage you as a parent to continue the learning aim at home on what the children have learned at the Sunday Pre-school.

I hope to see you all again at church on Sunday!

Blessings,

VK
